Hey UFC, Benson Henderson is free on April 25th in case you need someone to fill the co-main event spot for UFC 186. The former UFC lightweight champion took to twitter to offer his services to the UFC and issued an open challenge to any fighter.
The fight card for UFC 186 took another major hit following news that co-main event fighter Quinton “Rampage” Jackson has been pulled from the event following an injunction granted to Bellator MMA. Rampage was schedule to take one Brazilian Fabio Maldonado. This was just the latest blow to the card that has already lost two prime match ups including its original main event. The scheduled main event for the UFC bantamweight championship between TJ Dillashaw and Renan Barao had to be postponed after Dillashaw suffered an injury during training. Before that, a welterweight bout between Rory MacDonald and Hector Lombard had to be scrapped from the card after Lombard failed a drug test and was later suspended.
The event is still scheduled to have a Demetrious Johnson defend his flyweight championship against Kyoji Horiguchi and a middleweight bout between Michael Bisping and CB Dollaway but with Bisping and Dollaway both coming off losses, it is hardly a pay-per-view worthy co-main event. Many have also criticized the lack of star power flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson has and if he is capable of being a ppv draw on his own.
After suffering a tough decision loss to Donald Cerrone, Henderson has been a man on a mission to prove that he can still compete for a title and has even entertained the idea of fighting in two weight classes. It was only 27 days after his loss to Cerrone that Henderson agreed to fill in for a welterweight bout against Brandon Thatch. Henderson went out to win that fight via submission. With the Rampage case still up in the air we will have to wait and see if the UFC takes “Smooth” up on his offer.
