Edson Barboza is fresh off a win over former Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez. Prior to that Barboza defeated former WEC and UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis. The wins over Pettis and Melendez have put Barboza in prime position for a shot at the UFC’s lightweight championship and that is a position many other lightweight fighters want to be in. One fighter looking to get into the title picture is former Bellator lightweight champion Will Brooks.
Brooks took to his Twitter account to make his desire to fight Barboza known to everyone and to the UFC.
Brooks (18-1)recently made his UFC debut against former “Ultimate Fighter” winner Ross Pearson during International Fight week early this month. He defeated Pearson via a unanimous decision and looked stronger as the bout went on. He has not lost a bout since 2013 and has defeated current Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler on two separate occasions.
Barboza (18-4) last loss to Tony Ferguson in 2015 but has been a fixture in the lightweight division since 2010. He is also the owner of one of, if not the, greatest knockouts in UFC history when he landed a spinning wheel kick to the face of Terry Etim in 2012.
The UFC’s return to Portland will be on October 1, 2016 and is scheduled to be a Fight Night event.
