It was a main event that featured two of the bantamweight division’s youngest and brightest stars: Thomas Almeida and Cody Garbrandt. Coming into Sunday night’s event the focus seemed to be on not if but when Almeida will claim the bantamweight championship. With a 21-0 record coming into the bout, how could you blame people for making that assumption. One person who did not believe the hype was Cody Garbrandt and he set to prove to everyone that it is not Almeida’s time just yet.

It was the first time both fighters had the opportunity to headline a UFC event. It was clear that the company sees potential in both fighters as fan favorites, especially in a division where the biggest stars are beginning to age. Both fighters put on  show but it was Garbrandt who came out on top as he only needed one round to put an end to the Almeida championship talk.

Garbrandt landed a vicious right hand that sent Almeida down to the canvas. The fight was stopped at 2:53 seconds of the very first round. The win pushed Garbrandt’s record to a perfect 9-0.

Also on the card was a featherweight bout between former batnamweight champion Renan Barao and longtime UFC fighter Jeremy Stephens. Barao was making his featherweight debut after suffering losses to TJ Dillashaw. Stephens spoiled the debut for Barao and nearly finished the former champion in the second round after landing a series of upper cuts. Barao was able to survive the onslaught of Stephens but lost the via a unanimous decision.
