A welterweight bout between Matt Brown and Jake Ellenberger will be added to the UFC 201 card. The fight was made official by the UFC on Thursday. UFC 201 is set to take place on July 30 from the Phillip’s Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
Brown (20-14) will look to get back in the win column after suffering a submission loss to Demian Maia at UFC 198. Brown only has one win in his last four bouts after being on an impressive seven fight win streak. It seems as though the step up in competition has been rough for Brown as he suffered back to back losses to Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler back in 2014 and 2015. He bounced back to defeated Tim Means but then came the loss to Maia. Brown was close to a title shot a couple of years ago and a win over Ellenberger will hopefully put him back on the right track.
Ellenberger (30-11) has a similar career path as Brown. The Omaha native won six consecutive fights spanning from 2010 to 2012 and was very close to a shot at the welterweight title. Very similar to Brown, when Ellenberger was pitted up against the top half of the division the wins became less frequent. Since 2013, Ellenberger has suffered losses to Rory MacDonald, Robbie Lawler, Kelvin Gastelum, Stephen Thompson, and Tarec Saffiedine. A win over Josh Koscheck split the set of losses but yet to reclaim the momentum that carried him during that six fight win streak four years ago.
UFC 201 will be headlined by a welterweight championship bout between Robbie Lawler and Tyron Woodley.
