Rafael Dos Anjos to Defend Title Against Eddie Alvarez

UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos will defend his title against Eddie Alvarez just days prior to UFC 200. The fight was officially announced by the UFC on Friday. The bout will take place on Thursday July 7th and kick off three straight events that will culminate to the historic UFC 200 event on Saturday July, 9. In between the two events will be the “Ultimate Fighter” Season 23 Finale which will have a strawweight title bout as the main event.  The dos Anjos and Alvarez fight will air exclusively on the UFC’s Fight Pass channel.

Dos Anjos was on the fast track to a pretty big pay day as he was supposed to face Conor McGregor at UFC 196 but after a broken foot forced him out of the bout. Add on top of that McGregor’s loss to Nate Diaz and any chance for him to face the Irishman has gone out the window for the foreseeable future.

The bout will be Dos Anjos’ second title defense since winning the championship from Anthony Pettis. He defeated Donald Cerrone rather easily in the first round with a TKO. The champion has not lost since 2014 and has beaten the very best in the UFC’s lightweight division including Nate Diaz and Benson Henderson.

Former Bellator MMA star Eddie Alvarez is coming off the biggest win in his career when he defeated Anthony Pettis. Alavarez implemented and executed a perfect game plan that neutralized the striking of Pettis and earned him a decision victory. Alvarez has certianely proven he belongs at the top of the lightweight division as he has faced Donald Cerrone, Gilbert Melendez, and Anthony Pettis in his first three bouts with the organization.
