A welterweight bout that should have MMA fans excited to see has been set for the upcoming June Fight Night card. Former title challenger Rory MacDonald will face fast rising contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson in a bout that will see the winner in prime position for the shot at the welterweight championship.
MacDonald (18-3) has been out of action since his epic battle with Robbie Lawler at UFC 189. MacDonald suffered severe facial damage as result of the bout. He as been pegged for a long time as the future of the middleweight division and at only 26 years of age he is just entering his athletic prime. He deubted for the UFC in 2010 at the age of 20 and has been fighting professionally since the age of 16.
Thompson (12-1) is fresh off one of the most impressive performances this year when he knocked out former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks in the first round of their fight last month. He is 7-1 in the UFC with his only loss coming by way of decision to Matt Brown. Five of his seven wins have come by way of knockout and his unique style has made him a standout in the division and on the cusp of a title shot.
UFC Fight Night is schedule to take place on June 18. As of this writing no official venue has been announced.
