Gegard Mousasi Calling for Bout with Vitor Belfort

Throughout his decorated career, Gegard Mousasi has fought some of the best fighters in the world. He is looking to continue that trend with former UFC champion Vitor Belfort. On Wednesday morning Mousasi made his desire to face Belfort clear with a post on his Twitter account.

Mousasi is calling for the fight to happen when the UFC returns to Japan in September. Both Belfort and Mousasi have fought several times in Japan and it would be a homecoming of sorts for both fighters. Belfort spent many years competing for the PRIDE organization in the early part of the century. Mousasi also spent time with PRIDE and held multiple championships with the DREAM organization.

Belfort recently lost a middleweight title bout against Chris Weidman at UFC 187. Weidman was able to survive an early onslaught from Belfort and eventually took the fight to the ground where he won via a TKO. After the loss Belfort stated that he was not thinking about retirement.

Though it is Mousasi who is calling out Belfort, he does ask for certain requirments to be met before he steps inside the octagon with the former champ. In the Twitter post Mousasi stated that if the fight is “clean” he would be more than willing to fight Belfort. Everyone in the MMA world knows the TRT cloud that hangs over Belfort and his career. Though he claims to be off any type of TRT, his testosterone levels were once again a topic of discussion when Chris Weidman brought up a report of Belfort’s high levels in the weeks leading up to their UFC 187 bout.

Mousasi recently competed at a UFC Fight Night card that took place the Philippines where he had a very convincing win over Costas Philippou.

UFC Fight Night in Japan is slated to take place on September 27 and will be headlined by a heavyweight bout between Roy Nelson and Josh Barnett.
