Tyrone Spong Set to Return to MMA

Multi-combat sport star Tyrone Spong is set to make his return to mixed martial arts. In a story reported by MMA Fighting, the kickboxing, boxing, and MMA star will make his return to the sport at WSOF 22 on August 1 in Las Vegas. As of this writing no opponent has been named for Spong.

Spong has gained his notoriety in the kickboxing world where he is a multiple time champion and has 74 career wins. He has competed in K-1 and most recently in GLORY Kickboxing. Spong has also dabbled in professional boxing. He is 2-0 as a boxer with both his wins coming by way of knockout.

In the world of MMA Spong holds a 2-0 record. Both of his bouts have been under the WSOF banner. He won his debut against Travis Bartlett via a first round knockout. In his second MMA bout, Spong rode out a decision victory against Angel DeAnda. The bout took place in 2013.

The last time many fans saw Spong in action was during a GLORY kickboxing bout in April of 2014. Spong was going up against Turkish fighter Gokhan Saki when he threw a leg kick that was checked by Saki, Spong’s leg broke ala Anderson Silva against Chris Weidman. The bout was immediately stopped and Spong was out of action for almost a year.

WSOF 22 will take place on August 1 at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino and is will be headlined by a welterweight title bout as champion Rousimar Palhares will look to defend his crown against former Strikeforce champion Jake Shields.
