UFC Signs Former Champion To Its Strawweight Division

The UFC has added to the depth of its Straw-weight division by signing former Jungle Fight Champion Ericka Almeida. Almeida will make her debut on May 30 at UFC Fight Night against Juliana Lima. The bout was confirmed by the UFC on Wednesday.

Lima (7-2) had been in search of an opponent after her original bout with Jessica Penne had been scrapped. Penne had been pulled from the bout in order to challenge for the UFC straw-weight championship against Joanna Jedrzejczyk on June 20 at UFC Fight Night in Berlin, Germany. The championship bout was made after Alexander Gustafson was forced off his main event bout due to a back injury.

Lima is 1-1 in the UFC and after dropping her debut bout against Jedrzejczyk, she earned a unanimous decision victory in her next bout against Nina Ansaroff. Lima has proven to be a grinder as seven of her nine professional bouts have gone to a decision.

Almeida (7-0) is a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil and made her professional debut in 2011. She competed four times in 2012 but did not see action again until September of 2014. She had her first bout of 2015 in April where she defeated Jennifer Gonzalez with a triangle choke in the first round. Six of her career wins have come by way of submission and at only 26 years old Almeida is a has been a hot prospect in MMA.

The UFC Fight Night card will be held on May 30 in Goiania, Brazil and is expected to be headlined by a welterweight match up between former intern champion Carlos Condit and former title challenger Thiago Alves.
