Jorge Masvidal to Give it a Try at Welterweight

It seems that Jorge Masvidal does not feel that a 5-2 record in the UFC’s most competitive division is not good enough. Ariel Helwani reported on UFC Tonight that the lightweight will move up to the welterweight division for his next bout. Masivdal was last seen inside the octagon suffering a controversial decision loss to Al Iaquinta back on April 4th.

Earlier this week when the UFC was looking for a replacement to step in a face Donald Cerrone at UFC 187, Masvidal was more than willing to lend his services. The UFC went with John Makdessi instead and we may have figured out the reason why.

According to the UFC Tonight report, Masvidal wanted the bout with Cerrone to be a catchweight bout. The reason being is that Masvidal is planning on making the move up in weight classes. It makes sense why the UFC and Cerrone would reject the fight. Cerrone is at the doorstep of a title shot and why risk a loss in a catchweight bout?

The report also stated that Masvidal has had the move to welterweight on his mind for a while now but put off the move because he felt staying at lightweight would be better for his career. Masvidal has a career record of 28-9. There was no timetable given as to when Masvidal will make his welterweight debut or what fighter he would like to face.
