WSOF welterweight champion Rousimar Palhares will defend his title against Jake Shields as first reported by MMA Junkie. The bout is expected to headline WSOF 22 on August 1st. The event is also expected to take place at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
Palhares has been the center of controversy in his career as he was labeled a dirty fighter for holding onto his signature submission, the heel hook, for long after his opponent had tapped. It was his reputation that onto of a failed drug test that lead to his release from the UFC in 2013. Since joining WSOF in 2014 Palhares has gone 2-0 and won the welterweight championship in his very first bout with the company. He was last seen in action defeating Jon Fitch via a knee bar back in December. In his two bouts in the WSOF there has been no reports of Palhares having issues inside or outside the cage.
His opponent Jake Shields is also 2-0 in WSOF and he has also won both of his bouts via submission. Shields is a former Strikeforce middleweight champion and is a former UFC welterweight title challenger. He debuted for WSOF in October of last year where he defeated Ryan Ford. His last bout was a win against Brian Foster back in January.
The card is expected to air on NBC Sports Network.
