A heavyweight matchup between Cheick Kongo and Alexander Volkov has been announced and it will headline Bellator 139 on June 26th. The event is expected to take place at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kan.
Kongo signed with Bellator in 2013 after six years with the UFC. Since joining Bellator, Kongo has gone 4-2 and was last seen losing a split decision to Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal. Kongo has had a tough time putting together a long win streak in Bellator. He as shown to have a pattern of winning two then dropping one. That was his problem in the UFC as well. His longest streak in the organization was three fights. He now looks to start a new and much longer win streak when he meets Volkov.
Volkov is a young heavyweight out of Russia. He is only 26 years old but has compiled a 24-5 record. He is going to have a quick turn around as he last competed on April 10th where he lost to Tony Johnson via a split decision. Prior to that loss he had put together a five-fight win streak. Since joining Bellator in 2012, Volkov’s record is 8-2.
Both Kongo and Volkov have suffered losses to Bellator heavyweight champion Vitaly Minakov. This bout will be a huge step in the right direction for both fighters if they want to get another crack at the heavyweight championship.
