A welterweight match-up featuring two of division’s best is set to take place at UFC 202. Former interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit will face former middleweight title challenger Damian Maia in a bout that may prove crucial in the welterweight title picture.
The fight was announced on Tuesday and will be featured on a card that already has the rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz as well as a light heavyweight slugfest between Anthony Johnson and Glover Teixeira on the bill.
Condit (30-9) remains a fan favorite for his stand up skills and all out attitude towards fighting . He lost an all out war to Robbie Lawler back in January and many thought a rematch was in order due to how terrific the action was in their first bout. That did not happen as Tyron Woodley was awarded the next crack at Lawler and Condit was left contemplating his future in MMA. It seems as though the “Natural Born Killer” will fight one more time and is opponent is one of the sport’s most feared jiu-jitsu practitioners.
Demian Maia (23-6) has gone 8-2 since moving down to the welterweight division in 2012. He is currently riding a five-fight win streak with his most recent win coming over Matt Brown at UFC 198. The submission victory was Maia’s 11th of his professional career.
UFC 202 will take place eon August 20th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
