A welterweight championship bout is being targeted for the main event for upcoming UFC 201 card. Though no official confirmation has been made, sources have indicated that the UFC is looking to have champion Robbie Lawler defend his title against Tyron Woodley. UFC 201 is scheduled to take place on July 30th with Atlanta, Georgia being the location to host the event.
Lawler (27-10) is in the middle of one of the most impressive runs in UFC history. Since returning to the company in 2013, Lawler has had four fight of the night performances, one of which went on to win fight of the year. His battles with Rory MacDonald and Carlos Condit are considered by many as two of the greatest welterweight fights in the organization’s 20 plus year history.
Tyron Woodley (15-3) has had to lobby for a title shot while many have argued that Lalwer have a rematch with either MacDonald or Condit. Woodley’s patience has been rewarded as the UFC seems to be going with the American Top Team fighter in hopes of Lawler putting on yet another entertaining show for the fans.
