After about a day or so of speculation and a lot of trash talk on Twitter, Khabib Nurmagomedov will not be facing Donald Cerrone at the upcoming UFC on Fox card. It was announced today that newcomer Darrell “The Saint” Horcher will step in the place of Tony Ferguson and face the Russian fighter.
On Tuesday it was announced that Ferguson had to pull out of the fight due to fluid building up in his lungs. Immediately rumors about a potential replacement made its way around the internet. Donald Cerrone was at the top of everyone’s list and stated himself that he would not mind stepping in on short notice. Cerrone and Nurmagomedov even engaged in a Twitter battle but the UFC had decided to go in another direction.
Horcher (12-1) has an extremely tough test for his UFC debut. He is currently on a five-fight win streak and has competed in Bellator MMA in the past. He has been fighting under the Cage Fury Fighting Championship since 2013. He last fought in October of 2015 and defeated opponent Stephen Regman with a third round TKO.
Nurmagomedov (22-0) has dealt with numerous injuries that have kept him sidelined since 2014. Many consider him a legitimate threat to the lightweight title if he can stay healthy. Though he has been inactive his trash talking on social media has kept him in the spotlight. He even got into an altercation with the Diaz brothers while attending a World Series of Fighting event last year.
UFC on Fox will air on April 16th. A light heavyweight bout between Rashad Evans and Glover Teixeira will be the main event. The bout got bumped up after Furguson announced his injury.
