Wanderlei Silva Signs with Rizin MMA

Wanderlei Silva is suddenly in high demand. A week after he had signed a multi-fight deal with Bellator MMA, it was announced today that Silva has signed with the Japanese promotion Rizin MMA.

The signing is for an event to be held on April 17 event at Nippon Gaishi Hall in Nagoya, Japan.

Silva is currently serving a suspension handed down to him by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for dodging a drug test. According to Rizin, Silva will not be competing in a traditional MMA bout but rather he will take part in a “special grappling tag match”. Though the company stated that Silva may compete under MMA rules for future events.

In Japan, Silva is not under the jurisdiction of any Boxing or Athletic Commission based in the United States. Typically commission’s honor each other’s punishments so if Silva wanted to compete in an MMA bout prior to his suspension being lifted in 2017, it would have to take place in a foreign country.
