UFC 198 Becomes Official, Gets Heavyweight Main Event

After a bit of shuffling around the UFC has decided to award the MMA fans in Brazil with a pay-per-view event. What was originally planned as a Fight Night event has now been changed to UFC 198 and will have heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum defend his title against Stipe Miocic in the main event.

After UF C 196 was scrapped and repackaged as a Fight Night event the UFC was forced to push back certain dates on its calendar of events. As a result UFC 198 will now take place on May 14, 2016 at the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil. The arena is reported to have a capacity of over 40,000.

Heavyweight champion Werdum was slated to face Cain Velasquez back in February but after Velasquez pulled out due to a back injury, Miocic was put in his place. Unfortunately Werdum has forced to pull out of the fight as well due to an injury of his own.

Since returning to the UFC in 2012, Werdum has won six consecutive bouts, four of which have come by way of knockout or submission. In Miocic, Werdum will find a challenger who as gone 6-1 in his last seven bouts with the only loss being a razor thin decision to former champion Junior Dos Santos.

A middleweight bout between former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort and former Strikeforce middleweight champion Jacare Souza will be moved down one spot on the card and serve as the night’s co-main event. The bout was the scheduled main event back when it was only a Fight Night card.
