In the wake of the controversal main event from Saturday’s WSOF 22, president Rey Sefo announced on Tuesday that the organization has stripped Rousimar Palhares of his welterweight championship and has also placed him on indefinite suspension.
The announcement is steaming from Palhares’ action in his main event title defense against Jake Shields. During the bout Palhares was shown clearly gouging the eyes of Shields and for not letting go of his kimura when it was clear that Shields had tapped and when the referee was calling for the fight to be stopped. When Palhares did finally let go of the hold Shields was quick to deliver a punch in anger and frustration.
The bout itself is currently under review with the Nevada State Athletic Commission and both fighters could face punishment. As of this writing there has been not been no information on what type of actions Palhares would need to take in order to get his suspension lifted.
Saturday’s incident was the latest in a bizarre MMA career for Palhares. While no one doubts his ability as a grappler, it is his sportsmanship that has always been in question. There have been several incidents of him holding on to submission move long after a referee had signaled the end of the bout. He was released from the UFC for such violation and now it appears he has gotten himself exiled from yet another north american MMA promotion.
