As customary after every UFC event a few select fighters were awarded post fight bonuses for their outstanding performances. After UFC 189 on Saturday night Conor McGregor, Thomas Almeida, Robbie Lawler, and Rory MacDonald were all handed an extra $50,000.
McGregor, who had a stunning come from behind victory over Chad Mendes to claim the interim UFC featherweight championship was awarded one of the “Performance of the Night” bonuses. After being controlled a majority of the first and second rounds of the fight by Mendes’ wrestling, McGregor was able to scramble back to his feet and delivered accurate punches that sent Mendes down to the canvas and forcing the fight to be stopped with just a mere few seconds left of round number two.
The other performance bonus was awarded to Thomas Almeida who kicked off the pay-per-view portion of the event with a spectacular flying knee knockout over Brad Pickett.
The “Fight of the Night” bonus was awarded to the welterweight championship bout between Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald. The fight was a bloody one and it did not end until Lawler landed a straight punch to the already severely broken nose of MacDonald. The pain from the punch proved too much for MacDonald to bear as he collapses to the canvas shortly after the punch had landed.
