John Dodson will get his long-awaited rematch with UFC flyweight champion Demeterious Johsnon in the very near future. News of the title fight was announced on Wednesday’s edition of UFC Tonight. As of this writing no official date has been set for the championship bout but reports have surfaced that Johnson is pushing for the bout to be at UFC 191 on September 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Dodson (17-6) was last saw action at UFC 187 where he was victorious over Zach Makovsky. The win was Dodson’s third in a row and sixth inside the octagon. In his UFC career he is 6-1 with his only loss coming to Demetrious Johnson. The loss to Johnson was a unanimous decision but early on in the fight Dodson was able to connect with a punch that sent Johnson reeling back, it was the most trouble that the champion has been in during his entire title reign. Dodson will now have his chance to see if he can end the reign of “Mighty Mouse”.
Johnson (22-2) has quietly been putting together one of the most dominant title runs in MMA history. Since winning the title in 2012 he has gone on to have six successful title defenses. He has been criticised in the past for not being able to finish fights but he has since silenced those critics by finishing three of his last four bouts. His last win came at UFC 186 where he recorded the latest finish in UFC history with a submission victory over Kyoji Horiguchi at 4:59 in the fifth round.
