Welterweights Shuffle Around for UFC 189

Tuesday proved to be a busy day for UFC matchmakers as two welterweight bouts involving five fighters were agreed upon for UFC 189. Brando Thatch will fill in for the injured John Hathaway and face Gunnar Nelson. Thatch was originally scheduled to face John Howard on the UFC 189 preliminary card but now Howard will face Cathal Pendred. Did you get all that?

Thatch (11-2) is coming off a submission loss to former champion Benson Henderson and will look to bounce back after suffering his first setback in the UFC. The RFA alum had TKO wins over Justin Edwards and Paulo Thiago before being stopped by Henderson. His new opponent at UFC 189, Gunner Nelson (13-1), will also be looking to get back in the win column after suffering a decision loss to Rick Story at UFC Fight Night in Sweden back in October of last year.

John Howard (22-11) has hit a rough patch of late. He is currently riding a three fight losing streak and has not won a fight since December of 2013. Howard who is a MMA veteran made his professional debut in 2004 and may be facing his final days in the UFC if he can not get a win at UFC 189. His new opponent, Cathal Pendred (17-2), will do his best to make sure Howard stays on the losing side. Pendred, a native of Ireland, is undefeated in the UFC posting a 4-0 record.

UFC 189 takes place July 11 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and can be seen live on pay-per-view and is scheduled to be headlined by a featherweight title bout between Jose Aldo and Connor McGregor.
