A contest between two fast rising middelweights has been added to the UFC Fight Night card in Nashville, Tennessee. Sam Alvey and Derek Brunson will go head to head on August 8 at the Bridgestone Arena. The card will be headlined by a light heavyweight bout between Glover Teixeira and Ovince St. Preux. The card will air live on Fox Sports 1.
Alvey (26-6) is the former Maximum Fighting Championship middleweight champion and after dropping his UFC debut against Tom Watson back in 2014, he has gone on to win three consecutive bouts all of which have come by way of knockout. “Smile’n” Sam also made headlines during his last bout against Daniel Kelley because he had one of his sponsors spray tanned across his chest during the official weigh-ins and also during the actual fight. Alvey was not fined or suspended but was given a firm warning by UFC brass to not attempt such a stunt again.
Brunson (13-3) was long been a standout fighter even back in his Strikforce days, since joining the UFC in 2012, he has compiled a 4-1 record with his sole loss being to Yoel Romero. Brunson is currently riding a two fight win streak that saw him grind a decision victory against Lorenz Larkin and then he went on to knock out UFC veteran Ed Herman at UFC 183 back in Janurary.
Both Alvey and Brunson are not currently ranked in the top 15 of the middleweight division but there is no doubt that with an impressive win either man can jump right into the rankings.
