Bellator 172 was supposed to be the debut of former PRIDE heavyweight standout Fedor Emelianenko but due to a last-minute illness to his opponent Matt Mitrione an audible had to be called. Without a last minute replacement available Fedor had to be removed from the card and a lightweight bout between Josh Thomson and Patricky “Pitbull” Freire was moved to the main event spot.
