The “Red King” will make his Bellator debut in what is shaping up to be a violent match up.
Former UFC welterweight standout and title challenger Rory MacDonald will make his Bellator MMA debut on May 19th against Paul Daley. Officials for Bellator made the fight announcement early Thursday morning. The bout will serve as the main event for Bellator 179 and take place at the SSE Arena in London, England.
The signing of MacDonald (18-4) by Bellator MMA was seen as quite the free agent pick up for the organization. Bellator had been often criticized for signing “older” fighters such as Rampage Jackson, Tito Ortiz, and Chael Sonnen. Yet their signings of the likes of Phil Davis and Benson Henderson go under the radar. Many feel that Davis and Henderson along with MacDonald have plenty more formidable years left. MacDonald did leave the UFC on a two fight losing streak but nobody has ever questioned his skill level or doubt that he is one of the top welterweights in the world.
Daley (39-14-2) is infamous for being fired by the UFC for striking Josh Koscheck after the final bell of their bout. Daley did not appreciate Koscheck’s trash talk during their fight and showed his disdain with a sucker punch after the bell. Soon after his release from the UFC, Daley wound up in Strikeforce and found success but has developed a habit of losing high-profile bouts. He has dropped bouts to Nick Diaz, Tyron Woodley, and Douglas Lima. MacDonald would be Daley’s highest profile bout in quite some time.
MacDonald took part in what many consider one of the best fights in UFC history when he fought Robbie Lawler in 2015 and has developed a reputation of being violent inside the cage. He even promised a “bloody” beginning to his Bellator career.
Daley as well constantly promises fans that his fights will end in knockouts and he regualarly delivers on his promises as five of his last six wins have come by way of KO/TKO.
Bellator 179 will be held on May 19th and air live on Spike TV.
