The heavyweight rematch has been made official but this time the stakes are much higher.
Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos will get another chance to regain gold as he will meet Stipe Miocic at UFC 211. The organization made the official confirmed the bout on Tuesday. The event will take place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. This will be a rematch from their 2014 bout that saw JDS walk away with the decision victory.
Dos Santos (18-4) debuted for the UFC back in 2008 and went on a tear winning his first nine fights which included winning the heavyweight championship. JDS would have one title defense before dropping the title back to Cain Velasquez. The first loss to Velasquez really exposed JDS to many and he essentially has never really recovered from it. During the time JDS lost his title in 2012 until now he has compiled a 3-3 record and has battled injuries. He is coming off a win over Ben Rothwell back in April of 2016.
For Miocic (16-2), this will be his second title defense since defeating Fabricio Werdum back at UFC 198. His first defense came against Alistair Overeem in front of his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio at UFC 203. Miocic’s last loss was to JDS but many felt the fight could have gone either way. He has fared much better than JDS has since their first bout. Miocic has gone on to win his last four bouts and captured the heavyweight championship during that time.
Having JDS fight for the title despite his .500 record in his recent bouts is a little peculiar but given the current state of the heavyweight division he is the best man for the moment.
UFC 211 will be held on May 13, 2017 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas and air live on pay-per-view.
