Demetrious Johnson to Defend Flyweight Title at UFC 201

In a rather surprising announcement, Demetrious Johnson will defend his flyweight championship against Wilson Reis at UFC 201. The fight was made official during Wednesday’s edition of “UFC Tonight”.

Many had anticipated Johnson to sit back and wait for the upcoming 24th season of the “Ultimate Fighter” to wrap up before he fought again. The winner of that season will be awarding a shot at the flyweight title. The UFC and Johnson have apparently have different plans.

Johnson (24-2) is fresh off another dominant performance. This time it was against Henry Cejudo at UFC 197. Johnson needed less than three minutes to finish off Cejudo via a TKO. The win pushed his win streak to 10 in a row. It was also his eighth consecutive title defense. Many feel that Johnson has run through the flyweight division and that there is a serious lack of depth. Choosing Reis as his next opponent may prove those statements correct.

Wilson Reis (20-6) is currently ranked 8th in the flyweight division and is 4-2 in the UFC. His is coming off a win over Dustin Ortiz back in January but before that he lost to Jessier Formiga. Though he may not have the star power as a Joseph Benavidez or Ian McCall, Reis does have nine career submission victories and is the most dangerous ground fighter Johnson have ever faced.

UFC 201 will take place on July 30 from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The event will be headlined by a welterweight championship bout between Robbie Lawler and Tyron Woodley.
