Tony Ferguson Suffers Injury, Bout with Nurmagomedov Off

A highly anticipated bout between two of the top lightweights in the world has been put on hold. It was announced today that Tony Ferguson has been forced to withdraw from his fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov that was scheduled for April 16. After news of the fight officially broke first by Fox Sports, Ferguson took to his Twitter account to explain the situation as best he could.

The news of this match being put on hold add further to the backlog in the lightweight division. All contenders took a backseat to Conor McGregor’s request to face champion Rafael Dos Anjos but a broken foot to the champ scrapped that bout. McGregor is currently slated to face Nate Diaz at UFC 200 and the UFC has yet to officially kill off the possibility of McGregor and Dos Anjos meeting in the near future. The bout between Ferguson and Nurmagomedov was considered by many to be a number one contender’s bout and now the fighter to face Dos Anjos next is even more of a question mark.

With the lightweight bout now off the co-main event between Rashad Evans and Glover Teixeira will now be the night’s headliner. As of this writing the UFC has yet to announce a replacement to face Nurmagomedov.
