The long rumored rematch between Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez has been made official by the UFC. It was announced on Wednesday by UFC officials that the heavyweight rematch will take place at UFC 196 on February 6 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The two previously met at UFC 188 back in June. Werdum was dominant in bout a secured the victory with a third round guillotine choke. The win capped off an incredible journey for Werdum who was once cut by the UFC in 2008 only to return in 2012. Since his return to the company Werdum has gone 6-0 and has been one of the most active heavyweight in the organization by being able to finish his fights and avoid any serious injuries.
Velasquez has been bit by the injury bug over the past two years. Prior to his bout against Werdum, Velasquez was out of action since 2013. With a lack of real depth in the heavyweight division and the fact that Velasquez has not been healthy in over two years lead to the UFC’s decision to grant him an immediate rematch.
