In stunning news it was announced on Friday that Holly Holm would challenge Ronda Rousey for her bantamweight title leaving Miesha Tate out in the cold. The title bout will be the main event for UFC 195 and will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 2.
Holm (9-0) is a relative newcomer to the sport of mixed martial arts. Prior to entering the world of MMA, Holm made a career as a professional boxer and kick boxer. As a professional boxer she compiled a 33-2-3 record with nine knockout victories. As a kick boxer her record was 2-1 with both wins coming by way of knockout. She had her first professional MMA bout in 2011 and has had 6 knockout victories to date.
Rousey (12-0) is in the process of cementing her career as one of the most dominant combat fighters in history. Her last four bouts have all been under two minutes and she is fresh off a 34-second knockout of Bethe Correia in Brazil at UFC 190.
While Holm’s credentials may warrant a title shot, what is shocking about the announcement is that only a few weeks ago UFC president Dana White stated that Miesha Tate would be the next fighter in line to fight Rousey for the title.
Tate is coming off an impressive win over Jessica Eye at the UFC on Fox event in Chicago and since her last loss to Rousey she has put together a four-fight win streak.
UFC 195 will take place on January 2, 2016 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
